AT&T added it will use the airwaves to help deliver on its plan to launch mobile 5G in a dozen markets by the end of this year. The news comes just after FiberTower cut a deal with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to settle ongoing litigation which was preventing transfer of the licences to AT&T. As part of the deal, FiberTower agreed to surrender all of its 24GHz licences and a portion of its 39GHz holdings, but retained approximately 478 licences in the latter band.Approval of the FCC deal came despite the objection of groups including the Competitive Carriers Association, which urged the regulator to take back FiberTower’s licences and auction them off to interested operators instead. The FCC said in January the 24GHz licences reclaimed as part of the settlement will be auctioned to expedite 5G deployments.FCC commissioner Mignon Clyburn also protested the agency’s approval of the transaction without a vote by the full commission. Clyburn said in a statement she would not necessarily have voted against the approval, but claimed the FCC’s analysis of the deal is “lacking”.“I believe that our statutory obligations, under the Communications Act, requires us to do more than simply consider whether AT&T’s 39GHz holdings, post-transaction, exceed 1850 megahertz of millimetre wave spectrum. The Commission should also consider whether AT&T’s substantial holdings in other spectrum bands, including below 1GHz, together with these 39GHz licences from FiberTower, could result in potential public interest harms.” Amazon reels in MGM Diana Goovaerts Related
Dave Mason assembled The Quarantines, featuring an array of classic rock figures, for an all-star rendition of “Feelin’ Alright”, which he wrote as a member of Traffic in 1968. The video features appearances from Mick Fleetwood, Sammy Hagar, and The Doobie Brothers members and alumni Michael McDonald, John McFee, Tom Johnston, John Cowan, and Pat Simmons.Related: Chris Cornell Estate Shares Unreleased Cover Of Guns N’ Roses’ “Patience” [Listen]The video, which debuted on SiriusXM’s Classic Vinyl channel this morning, finds the who’s who of rock and roll royalty taking on the song Mason wrote over 50 years ago. Throughout the years, the song has been covered by everyone from Joe Cocker, to The Jackson Five, to Widespread Panic, to John Belushi, but in the context of quarantine, it has been given a wholly original meaning. With the coy song choice, this collection of classic rock figures is actually making a serious point: we’re alright. In the video, all of these aging rockers are looking happy and healthy, particularly Mason who, at 74 years old, can still belt out vocals and crank out a guitar solo like the 22 year-old man who wrote this song. Mason is doing more than alright, he can still thrown down with the rest of them after all these years.“Who would have thought that this would go on to be covered by so many different artists and bands, you just never know,” Mason said of the song. “But what I do know today is that people need some hope and comfort and especially music, which is why I called up some friends to re-record a special version of the song. To do this remotely was somewhat challenging, hence the name ‘The Quarantines’, but the spirit of strength, hope and heart prevail.”Watch Dave Mason and The Quarantines perform “Feelin’ Alright” from quarantine.Dave Mason & The Quarantines — “Feelin’ Alright”[Video: Dave Mason][H/T SiriusXM]
The SMM international trade fair of the maritime industry has officially been opened in Hamburg. Every two years representatives of the maritime industry and experts from all over the world gather in Hamburg to showcase innovative developments and leading-edge technologies, and discuss the industry’s prospects. (SMM: shipbuilding, machinery, marine technology). The opening ceremony of the 26th SMM took place on September 8 at the Congress Center Hamburg and was hosted by Bernd Aufderheide, CEO and President, Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.“This is a very special SMM,” said Bernd Aufderheide. The enormous interest shown by exhibitors and visitors alike proves it. More than 2,100 exhibitors and over 50,000 visitors are expected, more than ever in the history of this fair.“The fair welcomes every type and size of company, from market leaders and global players to medium-sized companies and innovation-focused start-ups. Their products cover a wide spectrum from large-scale ship engineering and shipbuilding products to ship outfitting and equipment supplies, and from cargo handling systems and maritime technologies to specialised services,” said Aufderheide. With its 26 national pavilions and exhibitors from 67 different countries, this year’s fair is more international than ever, he added. For example, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a first-time participant. “But it is not only in the exhibition halls that this event impresses. Our special-events programme sets new standards, as well, underscoring the role of SMM as the leading international maritime trade fair,” said Aufderheide. As an example he cites the integration of the gmec and MS&D conferences, the SMM Offshore Dialogue, the SMM Ship Finance Forum and Recruiting Day into the SMM programme.“This is a time when the eyes of the whole world are upon Hamburg. This is the heartbeat of the maritime industry, and this is where the future of the industry begins,” said Senator Frank Horch from the Hamburg Department of Economics, Transport and Innovation. The protection of the marine environment is one of the top items on the SMM agenda. Exhibitors will give some fascinating insights into the latest industry trends.“The shipping industry, working closely together with shipbuilders and suppliers, continues to devote considerable resources and capital to the development and implementation of a wide range of new technologies that protect air and water quality and increase energy efficiency. The full breadth of technologies available today will be on display at the fair centre,” said Dr. Stephan Timmermann, Executive Board Member responsible for Marine Systems and After Sales, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, and Member of the SMM Advisory Board.SMM will take place at the Hamburg congress center from September 9 to September 12, 2014.[mappress]Press Release; September 09, 2014
Ayrton Senna, photo HondaThe debate over who is the fastest driver in the history of Formula 1 has probably existed since the creation of the World Championship along with the discussion about who is the greatest. The more fans, the more answers. However, directly in Formula 1 they set out to find out who is the fastest and with the help of Amazon Web Services (AWS) they conducted a survey and comparison between the competitors who have participated since 1983. The calculations were made after eliminating the differences between the individual F1 cars. The speed in the qualifications is taken as the main parameter. The reason is that the ranking in the official session for the distribution of the grid seats is in relation to the times achieved for the tour. Calculations have topped three-time world champion Ayrton Senna. Second is the winner of 7 Formula 1 titles Michael Schumacher – 0.114 seconds. Third place went to the winner so far 6 crowns in the Grand Prix of Lewis Hamilton (+0.275 sec).In the top 10 are ranked some of the young stars of the current season such as Max Verstappen (fourth) and Charles Leclerc (seventh). Among the fastest in history are Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg (fifth and sixth, respectively). Perhaps more unexpected is the presence of Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli (eighth and ninth). Sebastian Vettel is tenth. “Similar algorithms are used in the teams themselves to make key decisions for the pilots,” said Rob Smedley, director of F1 Information Systems. “Strategists conduct similar calculations to build a picture of comparison between competitors. The purest speed is analyzed – the qualifying lap. It’s important to note that in this study, the only element is speed, and that’s very exciting. “If you find a spelling mistake, please let us know by highlighting the text and clicking Ctrl+Enter
Barça have taken a step forward, speaking with both Juve and Pogba. They now know the numbers of the operation will cost a lot, but the deal is possible and they are ready to close an agreement. Juve don’t want to sell this summer for less than 80 million euros, although everything will be easier if the operation is closed for June 2016. Upd. at 14:15 Without doubt, it is a complicated operation and could be one of the most expensive in Barça’s history, but they look keen to push through with it. Pogba is very close to the Catalan club right now. One of they keys will be the Champions League final. If Barça beat Juve, Pogba will be desperate to sign. The only doubt would be that they can’t sign him this summer. He could wait at Juve for a year, which, as stated, he wouldn’t necessarily mind, but Raiola thinks the moment has come to move on. Lluís Miguelsanz Both Pogba and Raiola see Barça as the best option for the player when he leaves Juve, and they hope the Catalan club will make enough effort to reach an agreement with the Italian champions. Talks are continuing, but Pogba doesn’t want to give a definitive answer until after the Champions League final in Berlin. For the first time in recent months, Barcelona now have concrete reasons to believe they could sign Paul Pogba from Juventus. Contact with the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, has been positive and the French midfielder’s priority is to sign for Barça. That could suit Barça, with FIFA’s ban currently preventing them from making signings this summer. Nobody can compete with those figures, but the player’s agent has asked for Barça to make an effort. They would be ready to spend to see Pogba dressed in azulgrana, convinced that he fits perfectly into the club’s current style and system. CEST There was a good feeling between both parties, but Raiola asked for an official move, rather than just talks with Braida. And that has now happened. 21/05/2015 Pogba isn’t certain he’s ready to leave Juventus this summer either and is still thinking about his destination. He’s clear that his dream is to play for a winning team and that, as of today, is why he wants to sign for Barça. He wants to play alongside Messi and also be a key man in the future of the club. For that reason, he’s not sure about Manchester City. The English club have shown they are ready to break the bank to sign him with an offer of 100 million euros and a hige salary. However, that could all be resolved if Juve gave him a new contract with more money ahead of a transfer next year. Things have not been easy, with Barça not deciding to play all their cards until the last month. There was a meeting with Raiola around four weeks ago. It was a meeting arranged by Ariedo Braida, who is currently loosely filling the role vacated by Andoni Zubizarreta. Everything will become clear in the middle of June, or perhaps a little later, such as the beginning of July. And Barça and Manchester City look like being the two finalists in the battle for the summer’s most wanted star.

Bengaluru, Dec 25 (PTI) Prakash Padukone, the first Indian to win the All England Championship title, today said the new scoring system for the Premier Badminton League will be an exciting experiment as it will add uncertainty to the matches and draw in more spectators. “It will be an exciting experiment. In the 11-point scoring system, anybody can win the match. There will be a lot of uncertainty, that will bring more spectators to the stadium and more viewership,” Padukone told PTI here in an interview. The statement comes in the wake of some top international shuttlers Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu welcoming the shorter version of the scoring system. Saina recently had said it would be interesting to see how it pans out, but the games will get over quickly as points are less. Sindhu, the Rio Olympics silver-medallist, had said the system will force players to be on alert and focus from the first point itself. Padukone, who also won the Danish and Swedish Open, said some amount of tinkering with scoring is always required for popularising the sport. “I think some kind of innovation and change is required for television viewers to make the sport interesting. So, I think in some ways it is good,” he said. Striking a cautious note, Padukone said as long as the 11-point scoring system does not affect or becomes a norm for super series and other tournaments, it is definitely worth experimenting. “As long as it doesnt affect or become a norm for super series and all that, but I dont think they (Badminton World Federation) are planning to do that at this stage, but at this moment, it is definitely worth experimenting,” he said.
